Ants on a Log is Julie Be (they/them) and Anya Rose (she/her). The folky duo writes music for children and other childlike people, songfully advocating for positivity, social justice, and silliness!
Julie and Anya met at a Philadelphia drag show/dance party and instantly bonded over their love of quirky songs with political messages. Anya was raised on Tom Lehrer and jazz standards, and Julie grew up listening to Ani DiFranco and They Might be Giants. The two began writing together, finding driving harmonies and song topics that were silly, serious, environmental, feminist, gender-bending, and just plain fun. In their off-stage lives, Julie is a music therapist and Anya is an elementary science teacher. Their powers combined make for smart and socially conscious folk, a delight for children and adults of all ages.
In 2016 and 2017 the Ants were awarded Leeway Foundation Art and Change grants to write and produce their musical, “Curious: Think Outside the Pipeline!” The show is based on the true story of Philadelphia’s fight for clean air, and the plot reflects the power that today’s youth have in the climate change movement. In 2019 the Ants released the “Curious” Soundtrack and were awarded a Parents’ Choice Award for the album.
As “Curious” grew into a touring musical, the Ants welcomed Philadelphia actor and multi-instrumentalist Emily Schuman (she/her) to the team. Emily has an extensive background working as an actor, musician, prop master, and educator for acclaimed theaters and troupes around the region. As an actor, she has performed on a variety of stages ranging from intimate Fringe Festival shows to the 1,000-seat Walnut Street Theatre children’s shows. She also performs as both actor and composer/musician for touring productions with Delaware Shakespeare, taking professional theatre to shelters, community centers, and prisons across the state. As a musician, Emily plays bass for The Bandits, a punk band made up of fellow actors, that grew out of an original theater piece with Applied Mechanics which paired feminist histories with scenes of the Pussy Riot revolution. She worked as a singer-songwriter in the folk-duo Chickabiddy, which toured throughout the region, and created multi-media collaborations, such as their original live score for Almanac Dance Circus Theatre. In Emily’s work as an educator, she facilitates innovative experiences such as her interactive theatrical design classes at Arden Theater’s Summer Camp.
Through their wide-ranging artist endeavors, Anya, Julie, and Emily continue to delight and challenge audiences, bringing a delicate balance of social justice and humor to audiences of all ages.
