When the pandemic hit, Brian Bishara, co-owner of Fountain Street Auto Service, had two goals: To make his business as safe as possible and to help those in need.

Bishara accomplished the first goal by keeping his shop, located at 6501 Ridge Avenue, scrupulously sanitized and not allowing customers to enter areas where his employees worked. Fountain Street Auto also offered drop off and pick up options so customers didn’t have to come into the store.

He then teamed up with Bridgestone/Firestone to sell tires at cost to essential workers, including staff at Roxborough Hospital. “They were helping by putting themselves at risk and we wanted to show our thanks,” said Bishara.

Business was slow, but Bishara kept all four employees on the payroll. He is also a supporter of North Light Community Center. That’s just the kind of guy he is, which is what has kept customers coming back for decades (along with the glowing 5-star reviews on Fountain Street Auto's Facebook page.

“The business was started in 1999 by my father, Karl Bishara. Previously, he had the Getty gas station at Ridge and Shurs Lane,” said Bishara. “At the time, we lived in Havertown. I began working here right out of high school and attended auto repair school at night.”

Twelve years ago, Bishara moved to Roxborough. “After working in Roxborough for over a decade, I fell in love with the neighborhood. It’s family oriented, a suburb in the city with great people,” he said.

Going into the family business was not what Bishara’s father originally had in mind for him. “He wanted me to do something else, but this is what worked best for me,” said Bishara. His father is now retired and Bishara runs the shop on his own.

“We do a full range of auto service,” he said, “Including inspections, maintenance, tires and used auto sales.” When not working, Bishara is an active outdoors guy. “I do a lot of biking and hiking in the Wissahickon and swimming,” he said.
