Stepping into Karen’s Hair Boutique, 5152 Ridge Avenue, is like entering a friend’s home. A complimentary cup of coffee or tea is brewing and so is the conversation and laughter. For the majority of customer’s, coming to Karen’s is like visiting friends or family. “I have been at this location for 35 years,” said owner Karen Barr. “Many of my clients are the children and grandchildren of other patrons.”

Unlike chain hair salons where stylists tend to be novices who come and go, Barr and her staff – Peggy and Cheryl – - are deeply rooted in the community. “My aunt was a hair dresserhairdresser and my mother gave me a choice. Be a nurse or a hair dresserhairdresser. I grew up in the neighborhood and, after graduating Hallahan High, I went to Gordon Phillips Hair DressingBeauty School on Ridge Avenue,” she said. “I got my cosmetology, teacher’s, and manager’s license.”

After working for five years at a Roxborough salon, Barr opened her own salon at the “elbow” on Ridge where is sharply bends before descending towards entrances to City Ave and East FallsMain Street. Surprisingly, pParking within a block of her salon on Ridge is never a problem. Barr has not changed the décor of her salon or, most notably, her prices in many years. Which That means you can get a fabulous cut and blow out here for a fraction of what you’d pay elsewhere.

To get an idea of the innovative coloring and styling skills of Barr and her staff, take a look at the Before and After photos on the salon’s Facebook page. Customers arrive with ho-hum hair and leave looking like Super Models! Whether you want subtle highlights, low lights or a high fashion cut, Karen’s Hair Boutique delivers.

We do a lot of coloring too, as well as thermal straightening, bridal parties, proms, facial waxing and eyebrow shaping,” said Barr. “Plus, we also style men’s and children’s hair. Everyone receives excellent attention from grandparents to grandchildren.”
