The idea for Poppy & Bean, 5543 Ridge Avenue, a combo vintage and thrift shop, goes back to owner Coleen Coyer’s childhood. “My grandfather, Poppy, called me Bean. He had a similar shop in Wayne named The Old Store. I spent all my summers refinishing furniture there and he also let me do the store’s windows and decorating.”

This early exposure led Coyer to later work at Scallywag, an upscale antique and upholstery shop in Wayne, for a decade. “It was a wonderful opportunity. They took me to Europe on buying trips and I got a wonderful education in antiques and vintage décor,” said Coyer who went on to have a successful career as a visual merchandiser.

Moving to Roxborough sixteen years ago, Coyer always had it in mind to open her own shop. When her two sons, now aged seven and ten, showed signs of not needing her constant attention, Coyer starting making the rounds of flea markets again and keeping her eyes open for an available shop. "I saw the For Rent sign on a storefront that had been vacant and called my husband, Phil D’Agostino, who is a professional musician. He said, let's do it! " The location is ideal, walking distance from her children's school and her home.

"Besides vintage items, I have a selection of locally made gifts, including aromatic candles and greeting cards. Kids like the special area I created for them that has clothing, books, and games. They like the used jeans and Phillies t-shirts and I enjoy seeing their early interest in thrifting, " says Coyer.
