When Rox Falls Vet opened on November 7th at 5708 Ridge Avenue, husband-and-wife founders and veterinary team Dr. Stephanie Cohen and Dr. Mike Altmeier received an enthusiastic welcome from the community.

"We are so excited and grateful to be creating this family practice here. Pet parents from East Falls, Manayunk, Roxborough, and Wissahickon were really thrilled to have a veterinary hospital within walking distance,” said Altmeier. When you enter Rox Falls Vet, you may see some familiar faces. Many of their team members live in the surrounding community. “We are especially grateful to Samantha Eberz, our certified veterinary nurse supervisor, who has been integral in helping us create this place,” said Altmeier.

“Besides cats and dogs, we also care for small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs. But patients should call before scheduling an appointment to make sure there is a staff member on hand who is experienced with these animals,” said Altmeier. For the record, the Cohen-Altmeier household in Flourtown includes two children, aged six and seven, a dog named Dash, a cat named Jersey, and two guinea pigs.

Dr. Cohen received advanced certification for animal acupuncture following her veterinary degree. “Acupuncture can really help a variety of conditions in cats and dogs. I use it mostly for arthritis in senior pets. The results are encouraging for people looking to improve the quality of their pet’s life,” she said. No needle acupuncture is also available.

When it comes to resolving behavior issues, Dr. Cohen finds that supplements and medication can make a difference. Not surprisingly, the most common medical condition in dogs and cats is the same as in people – obesity! “We guide pet owners in how to pick the proper food and balance exercise with food intake,” said Dr. Cohen.

Dr. Cohen and Dr. Altmeier met as grad students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and both have been in practice for over a decade. After working in veterinary practices in Montgomery and Delaware County, they chose Roxborough to launch their first veterinary clinic because of its access to Wissahickon Valley Park. “We love the area and had been coming to Roxborough for years. I used to live on Mitchell Street and we both enjoy fishing and running in the Wissahickon.  “I participate in the Broad Street Run, and Dash trains with me on Forbidden Drive. She’s a great training partner,” said Altmeier.

“Stephanie and I have a lot of experience working in other practices and we thought, ‘How can we have the greatest impact on our profession?’  That’s how our new practice was born. We are working with the pets and people we love in the city we love,” said Altmeier.
